Modern Electric Water Company is a customer-owned, not-for-profit utility that has proudly served the community of Spokane Valley, WA, for more than a century. Founded in 1905, Modern has grown alongside the region, evolving from an irrigation and land company into a resilient, community-centered electric and water provider. Today, the company delivers high-quality, economical utility services to nearly 11,000 electricity customers and 6,000 water customers, including residential, commercial and light industrial users. All of the power Modern sells is purchased from the Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), ensuring reliable, low-carbon energy for the community.
A Legacy of Community Building
Modern was born from a bold vision. In 1905, D.K. McDonald, R.A. Hutchinson, and A.C. Jamison purchased 3,000 acres of arid land and formed Modern Irrigation and Land Company. Realizing water alone wouldn’t build a thriving community, they also established Modern Electric Water Company, providing enough power to light a single 40-watt bulb for each 40-acre parcel. Their pioneering spirit and determination laid the groundwork for the Spokane Valley’s transformation.
As agriculture gave way to residential and commercial growth, Modern adapted, shifting from annual assessments to monthly utility services while maintaining its community-first approach. Today, it remains a lean operation with 30 employees and an elected board of directors, ensuring that decisions remain accountable to its customer-owners.
Commitment to Affordability & Reliability
For nearly 120 years, Modern has provided affordable, reliable and clean power to as many as 25,000 area residents. Residential electricity rates remain less than half the state average, thanks to careful fiscal stewardship and a steadfast mission to serve—not profit from—its community.
Investing in the Valley’s Future
Modern's purpose goes far beyond keeping the lights on. As a true community partner, it has invested in the people, places and programs that strengthen Spokane Valley. The company supports:
-
Local food banks and energy assistance programs
-
Social services and support for unhoused individuals and families
-
Youth development and education initiatives
-
Community festivals, schools and programs for underprivileged children
-

-

Locally Governed, Community Accountable
Modern’s governance is rooted in democratic values. Its board of directors is elected by and for the community, ensuring transparent, responsive leadership. Every decision—whether it’s about rates, community partnerships, or infrastructure—reflects the needs and priorities of Spokane Valley residents.
